Although Srila Baladeva Vidyabhusana is particularly famous for his commentaries on the Vedanta-sutras and Bhagavad- gita, he also penned other lesser-known yet transcendentally important works, among them his Namartha-sudha commentary on Visnu-sahasranama. This English rendition is especially welcome to me, as over the last several years I have been giving a series of talks on each name, and Visnu-sahasranama has become a major part of my life. In preparing my talks, I refer to various commentaries, and I am gratified to now be able to consult a thorough, carefully prepared English exposition of Namartha-sudha, which hopefully will supersede a previous interpretation which was circulated in that name but unfortunately incorporated many discrepancies. Several times after giving talks on these various names of Visnu, I have been questioned by devotee listeners expressing doubts about the relevance of Visnu-sahasra-nama to Gaudiya Vaisnavas, considering that one name of Sri Rama is equivalent to one thousand names of Visnu and that one name of Krsna is equivalent to three names of Rama- so why bother with Visnu- sahasra-nama? Is not Visnu-sahasra-nama in the Vaikuntha mood that Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu taught His followers to transcend? In reply, I cite that in Caitanya-caritam?ta we find Nimai Pandita, our own Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, ordering His dear devotee Sri Srivasa Pandita to recite Visnu-sahasra- nama, which indicates that Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu expected or knew that Srivasa Pandita had memorised and could recite this sacred text and that He Himself wanted to hear it. I also cite that our Gaudiya acarya Srila Baladeva Vidyabhusana Prabhu wrote a commentary on Visnu-sahasra-nama, in which he reveals meanings of many names relevant to Krsna's Vrndavana pastimes. Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura later published Visnu- sahasra-nama along with Namartha-sudha, and he wrote that the two main jewels in the Maha-bharata are Bhagavad-gita and Visnu-sahasra-nama. Apart from that, I contend that by discussing the imports of these names, automatically the topics of Srimad Bhagavatam, Ramayana, and other seminal Vaisnava scriptures are invoked in glorification of the Bhagavatta ("Godness"), sweetness, kindness, and beauty of the Supreme Lord Whom Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu worshipped as Krsna. And within my talks, I usually use the name Krsna, even more than Visnu, to highlight that glorification of Visnu is ultimately meant for Krsna; Visnu and Krsna are non-different, yet still Krsna is the fountainhead of all Visnu forms.Vishnu Sahara Nama
