Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura’s Datta Kaustubham was written in 1873 at Jagannātha Purī and contains 104 Sanskrit verses with an auto-commentary. This is one of the Ṭhākura’s earliest works in Sanskrit and presents a systematic analysis of sambandha, abhidheya and prayojana. The title ‘Datta Kaustubham’ refers to Kṛṣṇa’s kaustubha-gem of sat-siddhānta (transcendental philosophy) that has been given to Kedaranatha Datta (Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura). Although his commentary is in Sanskrit, Bhaktivinoda has provided an expanded Bengali translation which we have referred to herein. This translation of Datta Kaustubha is based upon the Gauḍīya Mission edition printed in 1942
